Crusaders put Centurions to the sword

Crusaders get the league campaign off to a winning start

North Herts Crusaders hosted St Albans Centurions in the first league game of the East Regional Premier. Crusaders fumbled the ball from kick off and had some early defending to do, and after defending three sets on their own line without conceding, they broke the deadlock early on with Josh Parkhouse crossing the whitewash. From then on it was one way traffic as Crusaders turned their brutal defence into slick attack as Man of the Match Ollie Adams’ and Ben Doughty’s half back pairing clicked and the tries started flowing for the home side.

Half time came and with Crusaders leading 32-0, they continued to assert their dominance in the sweltering heat, credit to St Albans who battled hard and kept coming back at Crusaders, with their efforts being rewarded with a well worked try. Crusaders forwards kept running hard despite the heat, with Ben Cullen, Greg Hobbs, Tom Tidey, Kyle Hughes and veteran Adam Naylor all making good yards.

Parkhouse, who graduated through the Crusaders youth set up, completed his hat trick, joining him crossing the tryline were Liam Fitts (2), Craig Jones, Kyle Hughes, Matt Houlden (2), Ronan Halpenny and debutant Joseva Nasaucoko.

The game finished 58-6 with the Crusaders laying down a marker to the rest of the league. Coach Joe Holding said after the game “I was really pleased with the performance today, everything we had worked on in training has transferred onto the pitch today and it was a great performance from everyone, all the players really worked hard for each other”

Training is on Wednesday nights at 7pm at Hitchin Rugby Club. Next week the Crusaders are at home to MK Wolves, with the Crusaders 2nd Team, The Knights hosting Luton Vipers.
